John Kimbrough Having served time in the Texas prison system as a young man, I have compassion for any man who is sent to prison or is doing time in prison. It was pretty much a nightmare for me, made harder to deal with because of a number of reasons. It... certainly changed my life and it has always been difficult for me to assess as to whether it was a positive or negative experience. At this time in my life I look at it as having been a very enriching experience...........Regarding this mater, I think each case needs to be looked at individually......We all need to be held accountable to some extent for our actions. At what age should that holding of someone accountable begin? What needs to be looked at? What are the extenuating circumstances, if any? I am always surprised at how many crimes some men commit and may not be incarcerated for, while other men are sent away for an extended period of time for their first offense or something small......I often wonder why a country and culture and people that likes to think of itself/themselves as being so great and wonderful has such a high gun ownership/alcohol and drug abuse rate/domestic abuse/child abuse rate, murder/rape rate and overall crime rate........ Deborah Kendrick I'm friends with a guy who was 17 when he committed his crime - and was given a 55 year sentence. He won't even be eligble for parole until 2028. By that time he will be in his 40's. When he gets out he won't social skills at all and no kind of job training. His familiy will all be dead. So what is he supposed to do? Oh yeah - no one was killed. J. Patrick Capps Regardless of guilt or innocence, this is just wrong. If he is guilty, I'm sure there is a more suitable punishment than LWOP. Cyndi Davis Oh Deborah tears flowed reading your post-My heart saddens with every case-God has put it on my spirit to advocate for those that feel unable-My state is looking at revamping the less serious felonies with drug circumstances -it is a start at least. I pray everyday for those without hope and without "people" in their lives to advocate for them Jill Leigh Life w/o parole should only be used in very extreme circumstances. Like the John Wayne Gacy, Jeffery Dahlmer types....clearly a threat to society. Vanessa Price Horrible! |
Throwing Away Our Youth: Really???
What are your comments about this subject?
Let us all just imagine that your teen 12, 13, 14, 15, or 16 year old got caught up with the wrong crowd and in the circle of his or her negative influences, committed or was simply present and, or... had some role in the commission of a crime. Now let us imagine further that the punishment for your teen would be a life without parole sentence. Let us not forget the still underdeveloped psyche of a teen (a child) regarding the real understanding of consequences, the value of life and death, and decision-making. Sentencing these kids to Life Without Parole is basically a Death Sentence...sentencing a child to Death in Prison. I don't believe any of the parents of these children planned or imagined it happening to their child. What if it happened to yours? I pray not for the sakes of both parents and children. People like you and me are impacting the shaping and changing of laws such as Life Without Parole for children. Find out how you can get involved. The lives of our nations children are depending on it! All opinions requested and respected no matter the direction of how you may lean on this subject. Thank you! Reaching Behind Bars |
